梅毒螺旋体对外界的抵抗力很弱，阳光照射和干燥环境都能很快使它死亡，因此梅毒螺旋体在人体外生存一般超不过1～2个小时。但是在缺氧的环境下它能生存数天，在潮湿的衣服上也能存活数小时，在血库中一般能存活24小时。梅毒螺旋体不高温，40℃～60℃时2～3分钟就能死亡，100℃时则即刻死亡。另外，梅毒螺旋体对化学药品也很敏感，肥皂水、来苏水、1∶1000的高锰酸钾液对它都有杀灭作用。
了解了梅毒螺旋体的特性，我们就可以针对其弱点将它消灭。如将衣物放于阳光下曝晒，放在干燥的环境中储存；将用具煮沸消毒或用化学用品消毒，都能杀灭梅毒螺旋体，阻止它的传播。
